Describe your reflections on your internship project—what went well, what would you do differently, and what stands out to you? overall I really enjoyed my internship. At the beginning I was a little skeptical because we started late and the plans weren’t really in place yet like we weren’t sure where we were going to go when we were going to go what days was online and what days are on person because they mentioned doing a hybrid schedule so that was a bit confusing and I was also a bit sad that all the paperwork took way too long to do and somethings didn’t even get filled out like my internship handbook and the lab work that they needed to be processed in order for us to be allowed to do well lab work so we didn’t get to do anything in the lab this internship so that’s why I think I might want to do the summer volunteer program there or whatever it’s called just so I can actually get a feel of like what it would’ve been like being in the lab . But besides that I am really happy I’m glad I learned new things not just about marine biology or animals but about life and meeting new people and stuff so I am really happy with my internship and I’m really sad that today was the last day because I’m really going to miss the people at the lab but I hope I can see them during summer !! yeah

Are you planning to continue working with your internship site or mentor after internship is over? If so, how did these plans develop? What will you be doing? yes!! I would love to continue to work at this internship location because I had so much fun and I learned so much cool stuff and I overall just really enjoyed the experience. Today after my IPO well we talked a bit more about options going forward and they said that we could internship there or volunteer there over the summer but we just had to talk to Dede about that and email her so we can start planning so everything is ready by the time summer comes around and we didn’t really talk about what projects we would be doing but they said hopefully more lab work if not just continue doing what we’ve been doing and that we might not have Stephanie or Kaylee as a mentor but any of the other people like Grant or Nia so I am definitely going to contact Dede about doing a summer job there with them because I feel like that is some thing that I would really enjoy doing!!!
Who benefits from the work that you do at internship? How and/or why? The person who most benefits from the work I do at my internship is probably Stephanie because we are helping her out with her project which is to find genes we think might be the gene of interest by looking for the gene code in finding files and then blasting and shooting at and looking at the domain in order to confirm that is indeed the gene that we are looking for and at the beginning of this project she told us that if we wouldn’t have done that she would’ve had to do it anyways and it did take the entire day of internship to do So if she would have done it herself it would’ve taken her a month longer to do it on her own, there’s also help out kleigh because kliegh I believe was doing the same project so this also helped Kaylee because while she was doing other stuff or getting a bit ahead in the project we could do the gym last night which left them with more time to do other things
In my work I'm glad to say that everyone is very social!! We use this app called slack to talk to each other and people send silly work tweets and memes or just invite people to lunch or events after work!! Most people are in the lab working on their individual work together but some people are doing their own things elsewhere, but that's only like 2 people or so. I really like that everyone here is really social because it makes it much easier for me to ask questions or just start a conversation because im not afraid to just walk up and talk to them about anything, like not just work, for example, on the first day here Stephanie and k'liegh were just talking to us about life outside of world, and while i work k'liegh well just talk about what's going on and she helps me find simpler ways to do stuff and we talk about things we have in common, like presenting anxitey LOL. But what i really like about this lab is that they're all friends!! im glad that they are friends and get along and joke around and talk because it just makes the environment alot lighter and happier and just makes everyone more comfortable than if the lab was just dead silent the whole time, because that would just be really awkward.
These are some of my favorites pictures i’ve taken at my internship!! first off is the toast and the sandwich, literally the best food i’ve ever tried, i got the toast today at pinpoint for lunch it was so good… a little too much Nutella but still delicious!! and i love how they made it heart shaped!! I got the breakfast sandwich from Carolines a few days ago after a meeting and it was SO GOOD. and it was only $7??? crazy. i took the foggy picture of the water on my first day at the lab and i remember it was raining really hard that day and we ate lunch on that table during lunch and i just wanted to go take a picture to send to my boyfriend so i ran out and asked ian to hold the door so i wouldn’t get locked out and i was probably out there for 3 seconds then ran back in. 1. it was SO RIDICULOUSLY COLD. 2 it was unnecessarily windy, it was nice but since it was raining it felt like i was getting stabbed in the face with 1000 needles.
What has surprised you most while working at your internship? When I first got to my internship I was really nervous and I was just afraid that I was going to somehow mess this up or that my mentor was going to be strict and rude or that I wasn’t gonna get along with the people at the lab and I just started thinking that everything was going to go wrong and I was just really anxious for my internship because some papers weren’t signed and as soon as i met them they started talking all scientifically and using big words and my mind was just all over the place and I was honestly so confused and lost and I had no idea what they were talking about. I was like “I cant do this project and I’m not gonna get any work done because I don’t know what I’m doing and i don’t know how to to ask for help because i’m not even sure how to explain what i need help with.” I was basically just like giving up at the very beginning but as the week went by I was really surprised at how well I was adapting to this internship. I met all the staff and students there and they were all really nice and we were Just talking about life and making jokes and stuff which made me feel a lot better and everyone just seems to mind their own business so I wasn’t really scared about how I could embarrass myself or stuff like that and the people I’m working with are really patient and understanding so I am not afraid to ask questions anymore like today I wasn’t really sure how to BLAST the sequences so i asked kleigh if she could explain it again and she did and made sure I understood everything and then afterwards we were just talking about college and our interests and stuff so the time went by really fast and I wasn’t anxious or nervous about just sitting there awkwardly. And another thing I was really worried about was what I was going to do during lunch because everyone kind of ate lunch with each other and I didn’t want to like invade or anything like that but on the first day Stephanie invited us to eat lunch with her and she added us to their labs slack and on there people post where they’re going to eat lunch and invite people so I could choose to go eat with them or I can just eat at one of the tables or couches, and there’s so many so it’s not like I’m gonna have to sit with a random person. I’m just really surprised at how well i’m handling all of this!! i’m not really stressed about the work I have to do and I understand what I’m doing and that was one of my biggest concerns same with lunch like I just go to Pinpoint Cafe, I get my food, I wait there for at least 3 minutes, I walk back and I do my work while I’m eating lunch either with someone from the lab or just by myself at a table and as soon as I know it lunch is already over and the days almost over!!!
So I have a secured internship, I think. Its in the process I guess its a little confusing right now but i have hope it'll work out, anyways I'm most looking forward to getting it 100% confirmed and just learning about fish and other marine species!!! I'm also most concerned about them taking too long to reply and not getting it secured in time because they take kind of long to reply, I'm also scared that they wont accept me because they're asking a lot of questions about my eligibility and its making me anxious x(
(jan 4, part 2, AGAIN) hi so this is the SECOND time i’ve had to rewrite this. idk why it isn’t saving. but basically i’m not sure exactly what i want to work on, i just want to like study and observe fish!! i would also like to maybe do some lab work, like testing water samples or like fish scales or like sea creature slime or something like that, OO or like studying climate change and species conservation or like working with otters and seals and turtles and sharks and cool stuff like that!! |
